What is conversational AI?

Conversational AI is software that holds a natural-language exchange across multiple turns, keeping track of what was already said rather than treating each message independently.

The term is used loosely enough to cover almost anything with a text box, but there is a practical test, and it is a follow-up question. Ask 'do you ship to Ireland?', get an answer, then ask 'how much?'. A system that answers the cost of shipping to Ireland is conversational. One that asks 'how much of what?' — or worse, answers about product pricing — is a form with a chat interface.

Why it matters

Customers do not ask complete questions. They ask a short one, then refine, exactly as they would with a person, and every refinement depends on what came before. A system that loses the thread forces them to restate context in every message, which they will do twice before leaving. Carrying context is not a luxury feature; it is the difference between a conversation and an interrogation.

Examples

  • 'Do you have it in blue?' following a question about a specific jacket.
  • 'And for the annual plan?' following a question about monthly pricing.
  • 'What about weekends?' following a question about opening hours.

Not the same as

Scripted chatbot

A scripted bot follows a decision tree someone drew. Conversational AI generates each turn, so it handles phrasings nobody anticipated.

Voice assistant

Same idea, different input. Voice adds speech recognition in front and speech synthesis behind.
