What does your workmanship warranty actually cover, and for how long?

What general contracting companies need to publish

Post-completion issues are common in construction, and an unclear warranty leaves the homeowner unsure whether a problem three months later is their responsibility or the contractor's.

How customers actually ask it

The same intent arrives in wording your page probably does not use. All of these mean the same thing:

  • “What does your workmanship warranty actually cover, and for how long?”
  • “general contractor warranty length”
  • “what's covered after renovation”
  • “who fixes problems after the job is done”

What a complete answer contains

For general contracting companies specifically, an answer is only complete when it covers all 5:

  1. 1

The workmanship warranty period, stated as a specific number

  2. 2

What is distinctly covered by that warranty versus covered separately by a manufacturer's warranty on materials

  3. 3

Common exclusions, named honestly — normal settling, homeowner-caused damage, lack of maintenance

  4. 4

The process for making a warranty claim

  5. 5

What happens with a truly urgent issue versus a routine one, in terms of response time

A worked example

Illustrative — not a real business

Our standard workmanship warranty runs one year from the completion date, covering defects in our labor and installation specifically — if a tile we installed comes loose or a door we hung starts sticking due to how it was hung rather than normal wood movement, that is on us to fix at no charge. Materials themselves, like an appliance, a faucet, or roofing shingles, carry their own separate manufacturer warranty, typically longer than our workmanship warranty, and we will help you file that claim directly with the manufacturer if something fails on the material side rather than the installation side. What is not covered: normal settling and minor drywall cracking that occurs in any home over time, damage caused by the homeowner or another trade working on the same area afterward, and issues arising from a lack of routine maintenance you were responsible for, like failing to reseal a shower surround as instructed. To make a claim, just call or email us directly with a description and photos if possible — we do not require a formal written process for something this straightforward. A genuinely urgent issue, like an active leak, gets a response within 24 to 48 hours; a cosmetic or non-urgent warranty item is typically scheduled within one to two weeks.

What silence costs

An unclear warranty leaves a homeowner assuming every post-completion problem is either entirely their fault or entirely the contractor's, when the honest answer is usually more specific than either extreme.
