How often should I change my filter?

What HVAC companies need to publish

It is the most common cause of a no-cool call, and answering it honestly prevents a service visit the customer would resent paying for.

How customers actually ask it

The same intent arrives in wording your page probably does not use. All of these mean the same thing:

  • “How often should I change my filter?”
  • “what MERV filter should I use”
  • “filter size for my furnace”
  • “does a thicker filter last longer”

What a complete answer contains

For HVAC companies specifically, an answer is only complete when it covers all 5:

  1. 1

Intervals by filter thickness, because a one-inch and a four-inch filter are not the same schedule

  2. 2

What shortens the interval: pets, construction dust, allergies, continuous fan

  3. 3

A caution on MERV rating — too restrictive a filter starves airflow on some systems

  4. 4

How to find the filter size, and where the filter actually lives

  5. 5

That a frozen coil or a system that will not cool is very often just this

A worked example

Illustrative — not a real business

A one-inch filter every 60-90 days; a four or five-inch media filter every 6-12 months. Halve that with pets or during any construction in the house. Do not jump to the highest MERV you can find — above MERV 13 many residential systems lose enough airflow to cause problems. The size is printed on the edge of the old filter. If your system is blowing warm or the coil has iced up, check this first; it is the single most common cause.

What silence costs

Answering it for free earns the maintenance plan. Charging for the visit that fixes it loses the customer.
