Sitemap URL counter
Enter a sitemap or sitemap index and we'll count what's inside.
Counts URLs in a sitemap. Given a sitemap index it follows the children and reports the total plus a per-file breakdown, which is how you find the one shard that quietly stopped generating.
How it works
- 1
We fetch the sitemap and detect whether it is a urlset or a sitemapindex.
- 2
For an index, each child sitemap is fetched and counted separately, up to 25 children.
- 3
You get the total, a per-file breakdown, and the full URL list to copy.
Questions about this tool
- Why does the count differ from Search Console?
- Search Console reports what it has discovered and processed, not what your file declares. A gap between the two is normal; a large gap means URLs are being rejected, usually for noindex or canonicalisation.
- Does it follow gzipped sitemaps?
- It follows the URLs your index declares. If your shards are gzipped, most servers decompress transparently over HTTP and the count works; if yours does not, the child will report as failed.
