Keyword density checker
Paste your copy and see which terms dominate.
Counts term and phrase frequency in pasted copy and reports density as a percentage. The useful threshold is not a search engine's — it is the point at which a human reader starts noticing repetition, around 4%.
How it works
- 1
Stop-words and very short words are removed, so the counts reflect meaningful terms.
- 2
Single words and two-word phrases are counted separately — phrases usually reveal more.
- 3
Density is reported as a percentage of total words, with anything above 4% flagged.
Questions about this tool
- Is there an optimal keyword density?
- No, and anyone quoting a number is selling something. Search engines stopped counting density well over a decade ago. The reason to check is that repetitive copy reads badly to people.
- What should I do about a flagged term?
- Read the copy aloud. If the repetition is audible, vary the wording. If it reads naturally — because the term genuinely is the subject — leave it alone.
