What is zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they needed from the results page itself and never visits a website.

Featured snippets, knowledge panels and AI-generated summaries all answer questions in place. The share of searches ending this way has been rising for a decade and accelerated sharply once search engines started generating summaries rather than only quoting them.

Why it matters

The instinct is to treat every zero-click result as a stolen visit, and for some queries it is. But the calculation differs by intent. For a purely factual query — an opening time, a phone number — the visit was never worth much, and being the quoted source is a brand impression at no cost. For an evaluative query, where someone is deciding between options, having a summary answer on your behalf is a genuine loss, because the reasoning that would have persuaded them happened without your page. The response that works for both is being the source that gets quoted: clear, self-contained answers near the top of pages, marked up so they are easy to extract, with the brand attached to the claim.

Examples

  • A shop's opening hours answered in the results — a fine trade.
  • 'Best AI chatbot for Shopify' summarised without a click — a real loss.
  • An AI summary that names your business as its source, which is the outcome to aim for.

Not the same as

Featured snippet

A featured snippet is one thing that produces zero-click results. AI summaries and knowledge panels are others.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Search increasingly returns synthesised answers rather than links. AEO is the unglamorous work of making sure the facts about your business — what it is, who it's for, what it costs — are stated plainly enough to be quoted correctly.

What is structured data?

A page's HTML says how content should look. Structured data says what it means: that this string is a price, that one is an author, that this block is a question and the next is its answer. Search engines and answer engines read it because it removes guesswork.

term

What is FAQ schema?

It is the most immediately useful markup on a support-content page, because the format matches how customers search. Someone typing a full question into a search box is asking for exactly what an FAQ block contains, and marking it up removes the engine's need to infer that the page holds the answer.
