Can I freeze my membership?

What gyms and studios need to publish

They are about to travel, have an injury, or are anticipating one. It is a retention question wearing the clothes of an admin question — the alternative to freezing is usually cancelling.

How customers actually ask it

The same intent arrives in wording your page probably does not use. All of these mean the same thing:

  • “Can I freeze my membership?”
  • “put my membership on hold”
  • “pause membership”
  • “suspend my gym membership”
  • “going away for a month”

What a complete answer contains

For gyms and studios specifically, an answer is only complete when it covers all 5:

  1. 1

Whether freezing is available at all, and on which membership types

  2. 2

The minimum and maximum freeze period, in weeks or months

  3. 3

    Any freeze fee, per month

  4. 4

How much notice a freeze needs and how it is requested

  5. 5

Whether a freeze extends a fixed-term contract by the same period

A worked example

Illustrative — not a real business

You can freeze for between one and three months in any twelve, for £5 a month while frozen. Request it through the member portal by the 25th for the following month. On a twelve-month membership the term extends by however long you freeze.

What silence costs

A member who cannot find a freeze policy cancels instead, and rejoining later means a new joining fee they may not pay.
