How disruptive is the work?

What trades and home service businesses need to publish

They are picturing their home in chaos and their week ruined. Disruption is often the thing delaying a job someone has already decided to have done.

How customers actually ask it

The same intent arrives in wording your page probably does not use. All of these mean the same thing:

  • “How disruptive is the work?”
  • “will there be dust”
  • “do I need to move out”
  • “how long will you be here”
  • “can I stay while you work”

What a complete answer contains

For trades and home service businesses specifically, an answer is only complete when it covers all 5:

  1. 1

How many days the job typically takes, and the hours you work

  2. 2

Which rooms are affected and whether the house stays habitable

  3. 3

Whether water, heating or power will be off, and for how long

  4. 4

What protection you put down and what dust to expect

  5. 5

Whether anyone needs to be home, and for which parts

A worked example

Illustrative — not a real business

A boiler swap is a single day, roughly 8am to 4pm, affecting the room the boiler is in and the airing cupboard. Water is off for about two hours and heating is back on before we leave. We lay dust sheets on every route through the house and take the old unit away. Someone needs to be in to let us in and again at the end for the handover, but not in between.

Which page should own it

What silence costs

A homeowner who has already decided to do the work keeps postponing it, because nobody told them it was one day rather than a week.
