Can I return an item?

What online stores need to publish

They are de-risking the purchase before making it. Most people asking have not bought yet.

How customers actually ask it

The same intent arrives in wording your page probably does not use. All of these mean the same thing:

  • Can I return an item?
  • what is your returns policy
  • can I send it back
  • do you accept returns
  • how do refunds work

What a complete answer contains

For online stores specifically, an answer is only complete when it covers all 6:

  1. 1

The window in days, and whether it runs from order date or delivery date

  2. 2

Who pays return postage — the single most consequential detail, and the one most often omitted

  3. 3

Condition requirements, stated concretely rather than as 'unused condition'

  4. 4

Whether a restocking fee applies, and how much

  5. 5

Which categories are excluded, such as personalised or hygiene items

  6. 6

How long a refund takes to appear after you receive the item back

A worked example

Illustrative — not a real business

Return anything unworn with tags attached within 30 days of delivery. Return postage is free within the UK using the label in your parcel. Refunds are issued to the original payment method within 5 working days of the item reaching our warehouse. Pierced jewellery and personalised items cannot be returned unless faulty.

What silence costs

An unclear returns policy suppresses conversion on every product page at once, which makes it expensive in a way that is invisible in support volume.
